Don't Waste Product SEO Value!

MageModule's Product Redirect is a Magento 2 extension created to fix an often-overlooked problem: wasted link juice! When a product is deleted or disabled in the catalog, the product URL then returns a 404 not found response. This leads to increased errors in Google Search Console and eventually results in being de-indexed by the search engines. This extension will automatically provide a 301 redirect from the former product URL to a relevant page such as the category that the product previously belonged to. 404 errors also provide a poor user experience.

Deleted Product Behavior

Normally, when a product is deleted from the Magento catalog, all URLs for that product are deleted from the url_rewrite table. This causes the previously working product URL to return a 404 not found error. With MageModule Product Redirect, all previous URLs for the product will be 301 redirected to the closest category page so that all of the product's URLs are guaranteed to work. If the product was not associated with a category at the time of deletion, it will instead be 301 redirected to the homepage.

Disabled Product Behavior

Disabled products are handled in a similar-but-different fashion. When a product is disabled in the Magento catalog, the URL rewrites are not deleted from the database. However, they do cease to work and this results in a 404 not found page. Disabled products will still automatically redirect to the closest category page or default back to the homepage. However, these URL rewrites do not get stored in the database. Instead, they are calculated on the fly, upon page load. It is done this way so that the product can be re-enabled and everything goes back to how it was before. Additionally, because disabled products are expected to possibly be re-enabled, the extension provides the choice of using a 301 (permanent) or 302 (temporary) redirect.

Configuration for Product Redirect Magento 2 Extension

Extension Configuration

The Product Redirect extension provides four configuration options located in the Catalog section of the admin panel. These options allow the user to decide to activate the extension for use with disabled and/or deleted products and to choose between a 301 redirect or a 302 redirect. Additionally, all options are configurable at the store view level. When the extension creates the rewrites, it looks at each of the product's existing URLs in the case that they are different for each store in a multi-store setup.
